About CNG Tank Testing
What is Hydrostatic Testing and why is it important?
Hydrostatic testing is a method used to inspect cylinders for issues like leaks, weaknesses in their structure, how well they can withstand stress, and signs of corrosion. This process helps ensure that the cylinders are structurally sound. Here's how it works:
A cylinder, like those used for containing CNG, is filled with water and placed inside a larger container filled with water as well. Then, pressure is applied from within the cylinder, causing it to expand. This mimics the stress the cylinder might experience during normal use.
To assess its performance, two things are measured:
-
The total expansion of the cylinder as it's pressurized.
-
The permanent expansion of the cylinder after the pressure is released.
These measurements are taken by observing how much water is displaced by the cylinder's expansion under pressure. By understanding how much the cylinder changes in size, we can evaluate its ability to endure stress without failing.
Additionally, a thorough visual inspection is done both inside and outside the cylinder. This visual examination helps identify any visible issues or irregularities that might not be apparent otherwise.
Overall, hydrostatic testing is a valuable technique to make sure cylinders are in good condition, capable of withstanding pressure and stresses, and free from structural problems like corrosion or leaks.
